Melvin Frederick Core, of Pawhuska, went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2024. He was 97 years old.
Melvin was born on November 1, 1926, in Hominy, Oklahoma. He graduated from Hominy High School in 1944. Melvin then served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman in WWII. Upon his return, he attended Tulsa Business School. After graduation, he went to work at the Osage Agency in the Oil & Gas department and later transitioned to real estate services, where he had a significant career until he retired at the age of 65. After he retired, Melvin served on the Osage Minerals Council.
Melvin married Joan McGee on January 30, 1948. They were married for 72 years which was a testament of their enduring love and commitment to each other.
Melvin was a long-time member of Pawhuska Golf & Country Club. He had an unwavering love for the game of golf that defined a significant part of his life. It was a cherished passion that brought him joy and fulfillment. He not only loved the game, but he also loved to teach others to play. He passed on his love and passion for golf to his daughter Leslie, who is a PGA Golf Professional. He played his last round of golf at the age of 96.
Melvin was also an avid supporter of all Pawhuska high school sports. You could often find him sitting in the stands cheering on his beloved Huskies. Anyone who knew Melvin knew he would be cooking his famous pancakes every Saturday morning followed by cheering on his beloved Sooners. Boomer!
Melvin is survived by his daughter Leslie Core-Drevecky and her husband Steven Drevecky of Russellville, AR; grandchildren Bryan Core and Brad Core of Muskogee,OK; daughter-in-law Charlotte Core Whitley of Muskogee, OK; sister Dorothy Manzer of Hominy, Ok; brother Carl Core of Pawhuska, Ok; 10 great-grandchildren and five great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Joan; son Allen Core; his parents William Bryan and Edna Townsend Core; brothers Floyd Core, Kenneth Core, Jack Core and Marion Core; sisters Ida Mae Penn and Lorrena Thompson.
The memorial service for Melvin will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 13th, at Kendrick McCartney Johnson Funeral Home.
